Tenth ASEFUAN Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 3 – 5 August 2011
The Tenth ASEFUAN Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held in the city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 3-5 August 2011 under the theme Securing Public Health in a Globalized World.
The two-day academic conference was organized in partnership with the University of Amsterdam (www.uva.nl), the International Institute for Asian Studies (www.iias.nl), the Asia Europe Foundation (www.asef.org) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands (www.mfa.nl). More than 70 participants attended the conference and exchanged views with speakers from the academe, public and private sectors. Topics included inter-regional cooperation on pandemics, ageing societies, public-private partnerships and innovations to technology, covered from both European and Asian perspectives.
In addition to the exchange of knowledge on a range of public health issues, the event also provided an excellent venue for the establishment of new partnerships and the strengthening of old ties. A Model ASEM conference was conducted on 5 August, where participants represented the heads of the ASEM states, the European Commission and ASEAN, in a role-play that simulated a public health crisis situation.
The Annual General Meeting in Amsterdam saw the start of another exciting year for ASEFUAN's new Executive Committee. Former President Krizna Gomez from the Philippines handed over her responsibilities to this year's newly elected President Pim van Loon from the Netherlands. The organization can look forward to the continuation of established projects and the creation of new ones.
